Vietnam Veterans: It’s Important to Know about Them

If there’s something that has impacted America the most then it is Vietnam War. This war caused the major turbulence in American history, with the war causing mass civil unrest at home. Since the situations was not good for everyone, Vietnam veterans returned home unlike any generation of veterans. In that sense, their homecoming was never like a good “welcome home” because the war was opposed by many.

A data reveals that around nine million Americans served during the War era, the largest in America. There are living vets with the median age of 71. Thankfully, things changed for them and now there’s a National Vietnam Veterans Day, celebrated on March 29 in honor of their service and sacrifice.

The largest number of volunteers

It was perceived that most of the serving people were sent against their will, without any good knowledge of the war. However, mostly who fought in the Vietnam war were volunteers, and respected their country.

A major conflict where a fully integrated military was used for combat

Integration of America’s armed forces happened in 1948 after President Harry S. Truman signed an executive order for the same. The integrated armyapproximately included340,000 Black troops, 80,000 Latinos, 42,000 Indigenous troops and 35,000 Asian Americans.

Not all service members made it to home

All Vietnam veterans couldn’t make it back home. From 2,646 unaccounted people at the end of the war, only 1,062 were recovered or identified. It means, 1,584 are still not home.

Veterans finally getting their share of honor

A large number of Vietnam veterans suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder. They still hold honorable discharge. However, things are changing for the veterans and they are receiving their share of honor after serving the prestigious military.

Be a part of GI Forum to honor Vietnam veterans who have lost a lot for the war that everyone wished had not occurred.
